Maps of eelgrass (Zostera marina) collected using drone in Placentia Bay, Newfoundland in 2020

This dataset contains raster files of eelgrass distribution at three sites (Swift Current, North Harbour, and Bay de L’Eau) in Placentia Bay, Newfoundland. This dataset was collected in the summer and falls 2020 and published in 2023. The shapefiles were created using the procedure detailed in Prystay et all. 2013: 10.1139/facets-2022-0149. First, aerial images of eelgrass beds were collected using drone and a systematic survey design. Images were then combined to create orthomoisaics. Finally, orthomosaics were analyzed using an automatic classification method to distinguished eelgrass from other substrate type (sediment, seaweed). Classification was informed and validated using validation points. It is important to understand that the raster files are estimation of eelgrass distribution from aerial images. Errors may have occurred during the habitat classification. This dataset is to be used for noncommercial purposes only.

Licence: Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial 4.0
Limitations: Maps of eelgrass distribution were created from remote sensing (drone) imagery. While some validation was conducted, it might be possible that image classification errors occurred and that some areas classified as eelgrass are in fact other type of habitats.
